International Imaging Materials, Inc. (IIMAK) was founded in 1983 to produce thermal transfer ribbons under a technology license from Fujicopian Co. Ltd. Of Osaka, Japan. At that time, IIMAK was granted an exclusive license to produce and market thermal transfer ribbons throughout North America. IIMAK's first marketable product in the Americas was ribbons for bar code applications, and the products were mainly sold through OEMs. As the bar code market grew and other markets emerged requiring thermal transfer imaging capability, IIMAK expanded into a major force in the imaging industry, driving new applications and products to the marketplace. IIMAK thrived on developing its own unique ink formulas and processes for manufacturing. From 1983 to 1993, IIMAK's growth was financed through internal cash generation and several private equity offerings. In 1993, IIMAK completed a successful public offering and was traded on NASDAQ until its purchase by Paxar Corporation in October 1997. In November 1999, IIMAK made a strategic move to provide superior service to its existing customer base in Brazil. It formed an alliance with the management of Impress Sistemas e Automacao Ltda. Establishing a new company, IIMAK Brasil Ltda. IIMAK Brasil converts and distributes a full line of black and color thermal transfer ribbons. In March of 2000, IIMAK's executive management team and Centre Partners Management LLC purchased IIMAK from Paxar Corporation. This move positioned IIMAK for global growth both organically and through acquisition. Since then, IIMAK has acquired Acucote Imaging, the ribbon business of ID Images, and Precision Ribbon Technology. Additionally, IIMAK has expanded its reach by creating a European subsidiary located just outside Antwerp, Belgium with both manufacturing and distribution capabilities. In October 2001, IIMAK announced its expansion into a brand-new, 55, 000 square foot distribution center in Amherst, NY with a potential for growth that would double its capacity. IIMAK continues to invest for the future with planned upgrades to equipment and facilities with expenditures totaling $6 million. The addition of new, automatic slitters, multi-station coaters, and the previous upgrading of ink-making equipment demonstrate IIMAK's commitment to growth and improved productivity.
