Smith McDonald Corp. New York (United-states)

Business overview

Smith McDonald Corp.'s history dates back to the late 1800's and represents the merger of two very successful companies, Smith Metal Arts and McDonald Products, significant contributors to the office accessories industry. Smith Metal Arts was founded in 1889 as the Heinz Art Metal Co. Named after its owner, Otto L. Heinz. The company prospered during it's early years and eventually became incorporated on May 8, 1905. During these years, the company introduced many products in the desk accessory market, an influence you still see today. The most notable is the Heinz calendar base product that was designed and manufactured by Otto Heinz. This is still available today, although modified from its original form. Throughout the 1910's, the company achieved numerous successes, but with the untimely death of Otto Heinz the company faced possible ruin. In 1919, the top salesman for the Heinz Art Metal Co., Fred C. Smith purchased the company. Smith was not only the company's best salesman but also had many connections in the jewelry business. Seeing an opportunity to enhance the business, he changed the name of thecompany to Smith Metal Arts. Metal spinning, metal polishing and buffing were craftsman skills that he promoted to build a reputation for the finest handcrafted desk accessories made from precious and semi-precious metals. The company also enlisted the services of Peter Muller-Munk, a highly respected and well-known designer within the jewelry industry. With this alliance, Smith Metal Arts was able to sell its products exclusively through leading jewelry stores throughout the United States. Products produced in the "Art Deco" style or stamped with the "SMA Silver Crest" trademark are considered collectors' items even to this day. In late December of 1995, the current owners purchased what was previously known as Smith Metal Arts. The name was changed to Smith McDonald Corp. As it is currently known today. This was done to make use of the two previous companies' name and recognition in the market place. In 1997 Smith McDonald Corp. Moved it's current location, which significantly upgraded the plant's facilities and capabilities. Along with upgrading the building and location, the company installed a state-of-the-art spray booth system to maintain high quality of the products' finish. The Radius One line was formally introduced and became an instant success at the Chicago Trade Show in 1972. The additional lines that were created as a direct spin-off of the Radius One line evidenced the success of this line. The Most notable of these spin-offs was the Radius One-Melamine Accessories line introduced in 1975 as a lesser expensive version of the original line. This line was designed to sell in a new, yet emerging market - the lower end desk accessories market.
