Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida Spina bifida (Latin: “split spine”) is a birth defect where there is incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around thespinal cord. Spina bifida is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There are four types of spina bifida: occulta, closed neural tube defects, meningocele, and myelomeningocele. The name “occulta,” which means “hidden,” indicates that a layer of skin covers the malformation, or opening in the vertebrae. This form of spina bifida rarely causes disability or symptoms. Closed neural tube defects make up the second type of spina bifida. and meninges protrude through an abnormal vertebral opening; the malformation contains no neural elements and may or may not be covered by a layer of skin Myelomeningocele, the fourth form, is the most severe and occurs when the spinal cord/neural elements are exposed through the opening in the spine, resulting Causes of Spina Bifida The cause of spina bifida is unknown, although a number of things that can increase the risk of the condition have been identified diabetes in the mother Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy Exposure to high temperatures Family History Obesity Symptoms of Spina Bifida The symptoms of spina bifida vary from person to person, depending on the type and level of involvement. Closed neural tube defects are often recognized early in life due to an abnormal tuft or clump of hair or a small dimple or birthmark on the skin at the...

SPINA BIFIDA Treatment Spina bifida surgery in indiaSpina Bifida is one of the most common permanently disabling birth defects. Spina Bifida literally means "split spine." Spina Bifida happens when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all of the way. Spina bifida is a developmental congenital disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube. About the term Spina bifida occulta, Occulta is Latin for 'hidden'. This is the mildest form of spina bifida. The skin at the site of the lesion may be normal, or it may have some hair growing from it; there may be a dimple in the skin, or a birthmark. However, other studies suggest spina bifida occulta is not always harmless. Spina bifida malformations fall into three categories: spina bifida occulta, spina bifida cystica with meningocele, and spina bifida cystica with myelomeningocele Spina Bifida Occulta is often called "hidden Spina Bifida" because about 15 percent of healthy people have it and do not know it. A meningocele causes part of the spinal cord to come through the spine like a sac that is pushed out. Myelomeningocele (Meningomyelocele), also called Spina Bifida Cystica. This is the most severe form of Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida Occulta usually does not need to be treated. Women who have a child or sibling with Spina Bifida, have had an affected pregnancy or have Spina Bifida themselves should take 4000 mcg (4.0 mg) of folic Children and young adults with Spina Bifida can have mental and social problems. This is also called a sonogram and can show signs of Spina Bifida such as the open spine....
